Skating club brings Africa to Whistler

Every two years, the Whistler Skating Club holds an ice carnival to show off the talents of our local figure skaters. This year the theme is "Safari on Ice," and there are shows on May 5 at 2 and 7 p.m.

The show will feature 24 senior skaters, 20 junior skaters and 65 Canskaters. The trip starts in Egypt, travels up the Nile River and treks south to South Africa.

It took months of preparation to research and develop the theme, co-ordinate and choreograph the performance, track down the right music, design and stitch 99 costumes, and to teach all the numbers and solos to the skaters.

Coaches and skaters have been working around the clock to get it down.

Gary Beacon, a former national competitor and a star of ice shows in the U.S., will also skate in the production.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $7 for children, and $30 for families (with a maximum two adults). You can pick them up in advance at the arena, or prior to the performance.
