The search is over.

On Sept. 10, the Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC) announced the appointment of Nigel Cooper as Interim Program Director for the 2001-2002 season.

"Nigel, who is currently in New Zealand, will be joining us in mid-September," said John Benbow, alpine chair.

"He comes to us with a long history in the ski racing world, having coached from entry level to international and Olympic-bound athletes, and we are delighted he is going to be with us for the start of the season."

For the past seven years Cooper has been head coach for the Japanese team at the Sierra Wireless Air Canada Whistler Cup, where he got to know the WMSC.

"His credentials are very strong both on and off the hill which is critical to our success," said Benbow.

Club president Paul McCullough feels Cooper has the experience to bring the club to the next level.

"Our goal is to become a stronger club not only regionally but internationally," he said. "This summer saw a group of our K2 racers involved in an exchange with a team from Italy, and seven of our FIS team training (with the national and national development teams) in New Zealand. We are looking at Nigel’s international experience to help us develop these initiatives in the future."

Cooper will replace Leslie Clarke, who held the position for three years. Clarke resigned in July for personal reasons.
