On top of the Rocky Mountain Sherpas’ new film, “The Fine Line:
A 16 mm Avalanche Education Film,” making its world premiere here in Whistler
tonight, local ski junkies are being treated to yet another high-def movie
prior to the season.
“Under the Influence” is the latest offering from Teton Gravity
Research (TGR). The 16 mm ski and snowboard film predominantly features the
people, places and moments that are integral to the winter sport realm,
following the adventures of today’s best riders as they travel the world in
search of new territory to conquer.
The Jackson Hole-based TGR crew scoured the top ski
destinations for the best locations to shoot this film, eventually setting
their sights on Alaskan virgin spines, park jumps at Grand Targhee, pristine
pillows and powder in the northwest and Jackson Hole backcountry, and as close
to home as Pemberton.
Featured riders include Seth Morrison, Dylan Hood, Jeremy Jones
and Kye Peterson. To check out a teaser, visit

The Rocky Mountain Sherpas’ “The Fine Line” premieres tonight
at MY Millennium Place at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., while TGR’s, “Under The Influence”
hits the screens at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2.
Gem of an evening
Sea to Sky Community Services Society is celebrating its 30th
year of enhancing the lives of individuals and families in the region through
support services, and to help mark the occasion, they’re holding a gala event
entitled, “Diamonds and Pearls” on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Quest University.
“It’s no mean feat for any organization, particularly a social
services organization to be in business for over 30 years,” said Doug DeRuska,
resource development officer for the society. “It’s quite a hallmark, given the
vagaries of government funding and the things that the society relies on.”
The evening includes a delectable buffet menu prepared by Chef
Gregg Van Hierden, featuring an assortment of appetizers, mains and desserts,
like baked brie with mango chutney, Spanish paella with seafood and Portuguese
sausage, and white chocolate mousse with raspberry coulis.
If the mouth-watering food offerings aren’t enough to entice
you to come to the event, the music may be. Mountain FM’s Rob Michaels will
emcee the evening, which features live music from 3rd Octave Down and
Bluesberry Jam Band, and a silent auction to top everything off.
Tickets to the event are $150 apiece, or $800 for a table that
seats eight, and they can be purchased at the society’s offices at 38144 Second
Avenue, or by phoning 604-892-5796. All of the funds raised will go towards
helping the Sea to Sky Community Services Society acquire a new, permanent home
for their offices.
A picture is worth 1,000 words
Professional and amateur photographers alike are being asked to
submit snapshots that best represent Whistler.
The Resort Municipality of Whistler is looking for a
photographer to tell Whistler’s story through photographs for the Picture B.C.
website, which will be launched in December.
“Picture B.C. is a chance to showcase Whistler in a unique
way,” said Kevin McFarland, RMOW Parks Planner and Public Arts Committee Chair.
The Knowledge Network is contracting photographers to capture
local images, which will later be featured on the Picture B.C. website, a
project designed to put the beauty and diversity of British Columbia on display
to the world. The project is a partnership between the Knowledge Network and
the Union of B.C. Municipalities, with the involvement of the Ministry of
Tourism, Sports and Arts.
Photographers will receive $500 for each photo accepted for
inclusion. For each community, a single photographer will be contracted for
delivery of the six photographs, and each selected photographer will have a bio
included on the community page to acknowledge their work. The Knowledge Network
and the Union of B.C. Municipalities will own copyright of the photos selected
for use in the project.
Interested photographers should forward a digital portfolio or
web link to Kim Thompson at kthompson@whistler.ca with “Picture BC Application”
in the subject line by Friday, Oct. 10.
The winning submission will be chose by a nomination committee,
and the selected photographer will be announced by Thursday, Oct. 16.
