Skier dies after cliff fall

Unidentified man was skiing next to Secret Bowl

A skier has died on Blackcomb Mountain after falling from a series of cliffs earlier this morning.

The man, whose name and age is not being released until his family is notified, was skiing on the cliff band next to Secret Bowl, near the Glacier Express chairlift.

Blackcomb Mountain Ski Patrol were called to the scene at approximately 11:24 a.m. Ten patrollers, including a doctor and a paramedic, rushed to help and tried to resuscitate the victim who was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The coroner is now investigating the cause of death.

In a statement Whistler-Blackcomb said the conditions were powder snow, with up to 32 centimetres falling in the last 24 hours.

The winds were light, skies overcast and the visibility was clear.

This is the second death at Whistler-Blackcomb this season.

Eighteen-year-old Michael Gjerde died in early December after falling from an obstacle in the Blackcomb terrain park. The obstacle was marked as closed at the time of the incident.

Gjerde died of a “cardiac incident” at the Whistler Health Care Centre hours after his fall.
