skier visits

Skier visits are 9.92 per cent ahead of last year and on track with what Whistler Mountain has projected for this season, Marketing Director David Perry said this week. Responding to a story in last week’s Pique, Perry said January skier visits were 9 per cent ahead of last year and overall the mountain is meeting projections. "We project growth every year," Perry said, although last season skier visits were down approximately 5 per cent. Meanwhile, the Redline chair returned to full capacity this week. Whistler Mountain finally received the last shipment of new grips for the Redline, and after installation Tuesday and Wednesday the lift is now running at full capacity for the first time this season. New grips for the detachable quad chair were designed and engineered from scratch this past summer, after the gravity-assisted Yan 7 grips were no longer deemed acceptable. Whistler Mountain and a consortium of ski areas that had Lift Engineering lifts with the Yan 7 grip developed the new replacement grips. The Redline can only be operated at 100 per cent or 50 per cent chair capacity, and because there were not enough of the new grips available until this week, the Redline had been running at 50 per cent capacity. Enough new grips for the Green Chair were received prior to the start of the ski season to enable it to run at 100 per cent capacity all season.
