Skifest offers something for everyone

If you’ve ever wanted to try out cross-country skiing or snowshoeing and are interested in a free preview, then the second annual Skifest celebration is for you.

If you’ve ever wanted to try out cross-country skiing or snowshoeing and are interested in a free preview, then the second annual Skifest celebration is for you.

More than 150 Nordic Centres around North America participate in Skifest, promoting a positive and fun image for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, says Kristi King, the Lost Lake Cross Country Supervisor. The event programming is targeted at first-timers, beginners and families.

"The theme of the day is free," says King. "Free use of trails all day, free ski and snowshoe demos as provided by Whistler’s finest shops.

"Don’t forget to take advantage of the free introductory learn-to-ski lessons by certified CANSI (Canadian Association of Nordic Ski Instructors) instructors."

Complimentary snacks and hot beverages are included, and there will be prizes and activities for families.

"Our cross-country volunteers always go above and beyond to make this an unforgettable event. Last season we had approximately 500 participants," says King.

Skifest takes place at the Lost Lake Warming Hut on Sunday, Jan. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free shuttle service is available from Day Skier Lot 5.
