The Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) is one of 63 Indigenous-owned tourism businesses from across Canada to receive a micro-grant from the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) this year.

Earlier this month, the organization announced the SLCC would be awarded $29,000 to help purchase a shuttle. In total, the businesses—from 12 out of 13 Canadian provinces and territories—received $317,000 to help "Indigenous entrepreneurs and communities growing their tourism operations and developing to higher levels of market readiness," according to the ITAC.

"ITAC's Product Development Fund is making a huge difference for Indigenous tourism operators from coast to coast to coast," says Keith Henry, president and CEO of ITAC, in a release. "We're seeing funds being invested in everything from training a young person to guide visitors through ancient sites, to helping with websites and marketing materials, to helping purchase a guest shuttle."

This is the third year the grant has been handed out. In total, it has awarded upwards of $850,000 to 140 Indigenous tourism businesses located across Canada.

Holiday concert

Need a bit of Christmas cheer?

The Whistler Singers are set to perform their annual holiday performance called A Winter's Song on Saturday, Dec. 15 (not to be confused with the even-longer-running annual Christmas Eve Carol Service on Dec. 24).

The evening of music takes place at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation.

Starry Night Holiday Show

The Whistler Skating Club is preparing for its final show of the year on Friday, Dec. 14 at the Meadow Park Sports Centre.

As part of the Starry Night Holiday Show, the club's skaters will perform alongside Alexander Lawrence, a champion BC Senior Men Division skater.

Entry is by donation with skating performances from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., a public skate with Santa from 7:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. and the annual turkey toss from 8:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The event will also include a silent auction and bake sale.

Whistler Holiday Experience

Everyone is glad to see the snow arrive in Whistler, but if you need a little refuge from the chilly outdoor fun, the Resort Municipality of Whistler is once again hosting its Whistler Holiday Experience.

From Dec. 22 until Jan. 6 (except on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1), the indoor family zone will be in full swing at the Whistler Conference Centre with a mini putt course, games, a bouncy castle and crafts. Adults can also enjoy coffee and hot chocolate in the lounge area while kids play. Drop in from noon until 7 p.m.
