Slow Food Cycle hosting open house

Preparations for third annual event underway

The third annual Pemberton Slow Food Cycle is planned for Aug. 19 this year, but organizers are looking for feedback from the community on the event and other Slow Food initiatives.

The event has secured financial support from the Village of Pemberton, Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, Resort Municipality of Whistler and the Sea to Sky Community Services’ Food Security Project. The lion’s share of that funding will go to produce an almanac with information helping people eat food produced closer to home.

An open house will be held at the Legion in Pemberton on Thursday, May 10, at 7 p.m. for anyone interested in being involved in this year’s Slow Food Cycle. The organizers will provide an update on event planning, and outline the tasks required of volunteers. The organizers are also looking to expand the number of people involved with hosting the event.

“We want to give people plenty of time to start planning for Slow Food Cycle 2007, and figure the best way to do that is get together in May and kick things into gear,” said event organizer Anna Helmer.

Farms are already pairing with musicians and chefs for the event, which sees hundreds of people pedaling from farm to farm to sample locally grown food and learn more about the economic, social and environmental benefits of producing and eating food grown near their homes.
