SLRD has its Day

If you’ve ever wondered what the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) really is, or what exactly they do, an answer may be around the corner.

If you’ve ever wondered what the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) really is, or what exactly they do, an answer may be around the corner.

At their most recent meeting, SLRD board members passed a motion proclaiming an SLRD Day for the upcoming year, with the idea of informing community members of the board’s role and the function they serve.

Board chair Russ Oakley said many residents don’t understand the purpose of the SLRD.

“People don’t know why we exist,” Oakley said at Monday’s meeting, adding that the day could be held during the UBCM conference in September to encourage other areas within the province to take similar steps. He said raising public awareness could help secure the role of regional districts within the structure of government.

Area C director Susie Gimse agreed the proclamation would be a good way to educate the public, but says their motive should not be to advance political issues.

Whistler Mayor Ken Melamed said a more tangible way to raise awareness of the SLRD would be to move the meetings outside of Pemberton to the other member municipalities, which is something planned for the summer months.

The board passed the motion to proclaim an SLRD Day and to advertise the event in local newspapers. They have not yet selected a date.
