The SLRD recently approved the draft Solid Waste Management Plan, and will be moving forward with community consultation.

The SWMP is a framework for increasing recycling and composting, and dealing with the disposal of remaining garbage.

The SLRD has a five-year goal to build on 2006 figures for reducing waste bound for landfills by an additional 30 per cent. Upon full implementation, the SLRD will have reduced the per capita waste disposed by two-thirds, in comparison to what was discarded in 1990.

The SLRD plans to hold four open houses throughout the region to inform residents and allow feedback before the plan is submitted to the Ministry of Environment for approval.

Community members are urged to take the time to offer their thoughts on the draft plan by attending one of the open houses or by downloading an overview or copy of the report sending them to the SLRD Office via mail, fax or email. Submissions will be received until Nov. 12.

Open houses are scheduled for Myrtle Philip school in Whistler Nov. 6, from 4:30 to 7 p.m., at municipal hall in Squamish Nov. 7, from 4:30 to 7 p.m., and at the SLRD office in Pemberton Nov. 8, from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
