SLRD suspends action against Terrane

As developer applies for temporary permit

The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) board has suspended its legal action against Terrane Construction. The board had been seeking an injunction to get the company to cease and desist operation of the topsoil component of its business.

The injunction had been championed by Area C Director Susie Gimse and the Mt. Currie Band. The band had filed complaints of smell and potential issues with run-off water.

The company acquired a third-party professional opinion attesting to the safety of both the topsoil end product and its practices. Despite the presentation of the report, earlier this month the SLRD decided to proceed with legal action.

But on July 24 the board adopted the staff recommendation to halt legal action until after the August board meeting, to afford Terrane an opportunity to apply for a temporary use permit, which the SLRD believes to be forthcoming. The company is also expected to self-impose conditions that would address the neighbourhood complaints.

At this time, Terrane has not made public whether it will apply for the permit.

"We’re been in contact and we’re exploring our options," said Tim Regan, principal for Terrane Construction.

The SLRD board meets again on Aug. 21.
