Smooch for a cause

Sensuous fundraiser for Waldorf school

What: Pink Martini Smooch Party

Where: The Den at Nicklaus North

When: Saturday, Feb. 11, 7 p.m.

Tickets: $75

Come in out of the cold and into the sizzling Flamenco heat of Vancouver’s Latin quartette Kadabra for a celebration of the arts, music, romance, education and community spirit at the Pink Martini Smooch party Saturday, Feb. 11 at The (Love) Den at Nicklaus North Clubhouse.

"The last four years, we’ve hosted Musica Intima at Millennium Place," said Michelle Kirkegaard, principal of Alta Lake School.

"This year we wanted to do something more interactive. We’ve got a lot of personality at the school and we want to showcase it."

The Valentine’s Day-inspired evening will support the Tuition Assistance Program at Alta Lake School, Whistler’s only Waldorf school. The program was created to ensure all local families, regardless of financial circumstances, could enroll their children in the independent school, which operates on student fees.

Singles and sweethearts alike will meringue to the nouveau Flamenco-jazz inspired beats of Kadabra, led by Dave Mortone, who studied at the Berklee College of Music and performed with guitar luminaries such as Yngwie Malmsteen and Paul Gilbert.

Taking a rest from dancing, patrons can sit back with their complimentary pink martini, browse the nibblies (including a chocolate fountain), catch the outdoor fire-throwing show or shop the silent and live auction tables.

"It’s a roving cocktail party, not a sit down dinner," Kirkegaard said. "The theme is romantic and fun. It’s going to be a lovely evening for everyone to come down and do the tango. It’s a real community event. Businesses generously donated. We are very fortunate."

Auction items to look out for include trips to Victoria, hotel nights and certificates for restaurants in Vancouver and Whistler, Vancouver Canucks tickets, golf packages, a Blackberry unit, a season pass, a three-day heli-skiing package, artwork and sporting gear.

Tickets are $75 and are available at Alta Lake School in Spruce Grove Park, the Adele Campbell Gallery in the Hilton Whistler Resort and Mountain Cellular on Main Street.
