Festival organizers W1 have announced the first Masterpiece in Motion, an international snowboard art competition that is arriving on the scene with some big cash prizes to back it up. The winner will receive a $2,000 US prize with the remaining $2,250 divided between three runners up and five honourable mentions.
Partnering with W1 to stage the competition is Original Snowboard Art, an American company based in Utah and Minnesota that uses its website as an online gallery of art and graphics for snowboards. The site brokers purchases of the designs from the artists to the riders and recreates them as a "topskin" for application on the boards.
Submissions to Masterpiece in Motion must conform to the Original Snowboard Art template. Along with the cash, winners will receive topskins of their designs.
The deadline for submission is March 15, 2005, at 4 p.m. P.S.T. Artists are permitted up to two designs for the entry fee of $30 US.
A jury comprised of members of the snowboarding community will select 30 finalists for display on the World Ski and Snowboard Festival website (www.whistler2005.com) for the duration of the festival, April 8-17, 2005. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony during the festival. A people’s choice award will also be given out to one of the 30 finalists, based on online voting.

Local snowboard art competition deadline approaches
The Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival is also holding a separate local Masterpiece in Motion competition in the Whistler community for elementary and secondary school students in four categories: kindergarten to Grade 2, Grades 3-6, Grades 7-9 and Grades 10-12.
The local contest deadline for submissions is 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 11. Templates are available from local teachers or online at www.whistler2005.com. Entries are limited to one per student. Winners will receive a skateboard or snowboard with their design as the top sheet.
