What: Getting The Most Out Of Your Music Career Efforts

Where: MY Place

When: Saturday, May 24

Whether you sing in the shower or on a stage, the next step to a career in music can be a scary thought. The costs, the contacts, the traps and pitfalls put a lot of people off taking that leap over the edge.

But is it all as scary, or as difficult as it seems? And could the rewards be more than you could ever imagine?

That’s where a music industry seminar with the Tandem Music Group might come in handy. The record label and record management company has over 25 years of experience in the music industry. Tandem’s president, Graham Way, is coming to Whistler to talk about all the avenues you’ll need to know in order to become a successful recording artist.

"This presentation is a huge reality check for many aspiring or even professional artists," said Way.

"I can’t tell you how many people have come to me when it’s too late, having wasted thousands of dollars and time on bad deals and management they could have avoided with a little advice and know-how."

Whether you’re a singer, musician, a band or even just an interested artist, this free crash course has been designed to help provide a framework for self-assessment and a strategy for developing career longevity. Topics include:

• Paying your dues and the talent development process;

• Improving your odds of getting more and better gigs;

• Approaching a record company, agent, etc. and how to prepare;

• The demo CD: how good does it really have to be and how much it should cost;

• The demo CD vs. a full-length CD project: when and why;

• The music video: who needs one, what it should contain and how little it can cost;

• Why today's record company, manager, agent or venue might or might not want you.

MY Place is hosting this free overview of the industry with the hope that these types of talks will become a regular event.

"I’d like to host a series of in-depth, affordable workshops and seminars in the fall covering specific music industry topics relevant to artists and songwriters, but we’ll see how interest with this one goes first," said Way.

The music industry seminar is on Saturday, May 24 from 2 to 5 p.m. Space is limited so you’ll need to register by visiting e-sound or phoning 1-866-898-4840.
