Get ready to dance.

DJ Qbert is coming in from the U.S., to headline an upcoming DJ extravaganza with local hip hop meister Mat the Alien and DJ Age at Garf’s.

DJ Qbert’s music is featured on the new film Wavetwisters, and his influences include both Miles Davis and Les Paul. Festival side, he was featured at Cannes in 1997 as part of the movie Hang the DJ, and at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival with the presentation Modulations. He has been profiled in Details magazine and Spin of NYC, as the 1991 Disco Mix Club Champion, and the DMC World Champion from 1992 to 1994.

The Qbert specialty is 12" break records, large scale gems a dime a dozen in the many record shops of London.

And Mat the Alien should know. Born and raised in the U.K., just outside Manchester, he ran a pirate radio station in a Pump Up the Volume kind of vein called IBC. Mat the Alien also ran a charts show on Sunset 102 FM weekly on the Mix Factory Show with XTC.

Whistler-bound in 1995, snowboarding coupled with regular hip hop gigs panned into opening performances for larger acts for the British import DJ. A regular producer of snowboard film soundtracks for Tree Top Productions, Mat the Alien has opened for among others the Rascalz, Vancouver artist Moka Only (of Road Life fame), and rapper Afrika Bambaata (Death Mix).

Keeping busy, he also headlines the weekly hip hop night Context with beats every Sunday at Maxx Fish. At these shows, a different hip hop artist performs live every week, followed by an MC opportunity for other talent to sustain underground hip hop. Context also takes place in Vancouver every Monday night on Carrall Street.
