Metro Vancouver gas prices have broken the all-time record high with a number of stations showing 164.9 cents per litre on Monday morning, April 8.

Dan McTeague, a Senior Petroleum Analyst with GasBuddy.com, tweeted about the rising prices on Sunday, noting that many stations would hit the record today.

With that in mind, McTeague has been tweeting about the soaring prices since last week. On Thursday he tweeted that stations were at their highest point since October. He added that they would likely break the record on Friday, too.

On Sunday April 7, McTeague tweeted that a number of stations were already showing a record high of 164.9 cents per litre. Further, he predicted that, "many more stations will follow by tomorrow morning (April 9)."

On Monday April 1, British Columbia's long-standing carbon tax increased to $40 a ton, which is double the federal carbon tax introduced in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick - provinces that did not previously have any carbon tax in place.

That adds another 1.2 cents per litre at the pump, McTeague said.

The previous record high was broken in October, with a number of Lower Mainland stations showing as high as $163.9 cents per litre.
