Between the Squamish Winter League and the Whistler Summer League, Petern Wortman believes that Whistler is capable of fielding a top shelf all-star soccer team.
On Labour Day he hopes to field a team for Millennium Insurance Prince George Soccer Skins Tournament in Prince George. He doesnt think hell have a problem finding a roster of 20 players, but he estimates that it will cost approximately $2,000 to cover the cost of getting them there.
With only a few weeks to raise the cash, Wortman is going into overdrive with fundraising efforts.
"I feel that our Whistler representatives can win this event, so we are travelling there. In order to travel and take 20 players without it costing us an arm and a leg a lot of guys wouldnt be able to afford the trip I have come up with a plan of action."
Since it is a skins tournament, the registration fees paid by the 12 teams entering the tournament will go towards the winning teams. Wortman is willing to donate the proceeds from the win which he says is a lock for the all-star team to WAG. By backing a charity, he feels it will be easier to get financial backing from local businesses. He also wants to hold a silent auction, a car wash, and a party at a local bar or restaurant.
The team is also looking for a local company to sponsor shirts in exchange for their logos prominently displayed.
