Solid waste, TV curling on council agenda

Landfill contract, transfer station up for discussion

Municipal staff is recommending that Sabre Transport be awarded the contract to close the Whistler landfill at a cost of $4.5 million.

The recommendation is one of two regarding solid waste that council will deal with at tonight’s meeting, which starts at 6:30 p.m.

The second recommendation is that council support an application for Crown land to build a new waste transfer station at the entrance to the Callaghan Valley.

Also on the council agenda tonight is a request to provide a television and production crew full access to Meadow Park Sports Centre for five days in November at no cost. Carr Hughes Productions and USA Curling want to produce a show for NBC television, called the US Curling Team Celebrity Challenge.

The dates for the made-for-TV production are Tuesday, Nov. 14 to Saturday, Nov. 18. All programs at the Meadow Park Sports Centre impacted by the production would be cancelled or re-scheduled.

The show would be broadcast in the U.S.A. on Sunday, Nov. 26, which is the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend.

A public hearing on the Rainbow land housing project is also scheduled for tonight, starting at 7 p.m. at MY Millennium Place.
