Spanish inspired beauty

Vancouver's Pacifica fires up Spanish sensuality for passionate show
1311pacifica

Who: Pacifica

When: Wednesday, March 22

Where: Garibaldi Lift Company

Tickets: $10/$15

In one instance, Pacifica’s Latin rhythms on the breathy ballad Unveiled conjure images of Spain’s wind-swept shores. The next, Spanish beats charged by pop-rock infused tempos, such as those found in the song Glory is Love, foreshadow listeners being drawn to their feet.

Whatever rhythm played out on percussion, the music is as beautiful as its songstress, Silvana Kane: a Peruvian beauty who seeks to unite listeners into the moment with sensual, passionate and distinctively Spanish tones.

"It’s a very sexy, passionate show," said the Lima native. "What I mean by sexy is sensual. I think women are beautiful beings and it’s okay to be passionate. I think Mother Nature is a big force, so to embody it is a beautiful thing…. Music is about a celebration for people to feel – to have a moment to connect with each other. It’s always a fun show."

The "Spanglish"-inspired four-piece band will connect with Whistler Wednesday, March 22 at the Garibaldi Lift Company (GLC).

Pacifica sprung from the renewed friendship of Kane and Adam Popowitz. The two friends originally worked in different bands: Kane in West End Girls, the opening act for Roxette; Popowitz in Mollies Revenge and YveAdam, whose credits include opening for artists such as kd lang, Bryan Adams and Third Eye Blind.

After performing to thousands of club goers in Ibiza, Spain, Kane returned to Vancouver to merge Atlantic with Pacific, a union of Spanish and English in one sound, which ebbs and flows like the ocean that inspired the band’s name.

"It’s not Latin, Hispanic or Flamenco: It’s not easily defined," Kane explained. "It’s very soulful and passionate. What I hear from people that come to the show is when I go from English to Spanish, it increases the intensity of the music."

Checking out one of Pacifica’s newest songs, Unveiled at www.pacificamusic.net, Kane seamlessly floats between the two languages with no translation book necessary.

"Despite not understanding every word I say, (audiences) understand the sentiment which is the nicest part of the music," she said.

Kane’s words of humanity, sexuality and love are traveling Canada and the U.S. with three cross-Canada tours and showcases in Los Angeles and New York. Their single, Libertad, continues its 14-month circulation on 104.9 ClearFM/Vancouver, with the song also featured on Bravo’s Godiva’s later this month. Contribution will be aired on the television show Designer Guys and the video Glory is Love is no stranger to MuchMore Music programming.

Kane and Popwitz are joined by Joseph Pepe Danza on Cajon and congas, and Pacifica’s newest addition, bassist Toby Peter, whose last project was working with K-OS.

Advanced $10 tickets are available at the GLC or $15 at the door.
