There may not have been any medals presented to racers during the Hongkong Bank Whistler Ski Classic, but five Whistlerites were winners of the first Spirit Awards for community service. Al Grey of the Whistler Off Road Cycling Association, Debbie Smythe, who has been active in Parent Advisory Councils at Myrtle Philip school, Angela McKerral of the Young Adults Partnership Program, filmmaker Greg Stump and Rick Flebbe, who has promoted and contributed to Whistler through business and personal efforts, received the awards Nov. 29 during the festival. The Spirit Awards will be presented annually during the Hongkong Bank Whistler Ski Classic to individuals who personify the unique Whistler spirit and whose contributions have positively affected the community. The Spirit Awards themselves are glass trophies carved by Haida artist Clarence Mills, who also designs the medals presented at World Cup races in Whistler.
