The Whistler Saints got back to their winning ways on Sunday, Oct. 20, improving to 6-1 in North Shore Football League play with a convincing 31-12 victory over the North Vancouver 49ers.
The flag football squad scored early and often in the win, finding the end zone on its first offensive drive, and on the kickoff return to open the second half. The Saints avoided back-to-back losses after dropping last week's contest.
Liam Forsyth, Quinn Goertson and Benyon McKeen each scored first-half touchdowns, while Logan Anderson scored on the kick return in addition to his three successful converts.
The Saints are back in action against the Hawks on the morning of Sunday, Oct. 27 at Squamish Elementary School.
Still some youth soccer on
Although the Whistler Youth Soccer Club's annual Professional Development Day Tournament has effectively been cancelled, the Sea to Sky will still see plenty of action on the pitch over the weekend.
Though all games for U12 boys and girls and U14 boys have been called off for the tournament originally scheduled for Friday, Oct. 25, the Whistler Avalanche U14 girls' team will still be in action against a Vancouver opponent. Games will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at Myrtle Philip Community School.
Younger players will then take to Pemberton Meadows Field on Sunday, Oct. 27, as the Fall Jamboree for U8 and U10 teams returns to the Spud Valley. Games will begin at 9 a.m., with each team playing three games apiece.
The WYSC will also be hosting its annual gala dinner on Saturday, Nov. 2, starting at 6 p.m. at the Whistler Conference Centre. Tickets are available at www.whistlersoccer.com until Friday, Oct. 25.
World Cup season kicking off
The alpine skiing World Cup season is set to get underway this weekend, as there's enough snow at Soelden, Austria, to begin the year with a women's giant slalom on Saturday, Oct. 26 and a men's GS the following day.
Though no Whistler-trained skiers are expected to compete at the first event of the year, there will still be a large Canadian contingent on hand in Austria. Marie-Michèle Gagnon, Erin Mielzynski and Marie-Pier Préfontaine will make up the women's squad. The Canadian men's roster was not yet finalized in the days leading up to the event, but Erik Read, Trevor Philp and Phil Brown are good bets to be in the gates for the team on Sunday.
