The 21st annual Whistler Valley Trail Run is seeking volunteers to help out with the event, which takes place on Sunday, May 27.

The 21st annual Whistler Valley Trail Run is seeking volunteers to help out with the event, which takes place on Sunday, May 27.

There are 5km and 10km routes available through Lost Lake Park, and volunteers are needed as marshalls, at the water station and at the start/finish area at Spruce Grove Park.

Day-of-race registration gets underway at 7:30 a.m. for a 9 a.m. start. The entire event, including awards, should be wrapped up completely by noon.

For runners, online registration is available through the website at www.whistlervalleytrailrun.org for $20. Family registration is $40. All proceeds go towards the Youth Community Foundation of Whistler, which supports youth initiatives.

To celebrate 21 years, there will be a prize for the runner with the best early '90s costume.

KIP athletes off to a strong start

A group of Whistler's Kids In Progress (KIP) athletes headed to Delta this past weekend to compete at the Delta Invitational. All of the athletes are newcomers aged six to 10 and were judged at a bronze, silver or gold level after every apparatus.

Ayva Spiering won the only gold medal for the group on beam, as well as finishing with silver medals on vault, floor and bars. All of the other athletes performed at the silver level with the occasional bronze — Skyler Williamson, Ajah Newsome, Elle Johnston, Jaden Cote and Mali Forest.

The club's next competition is the Zone 5 Championship in North Vancouver on May 26-27.

The summer camp schedule is on the website, www.whistlergymnastics.com.

Half marathon entertainment booked

Half the fun is getting there in the Whistler Half Marathon on June 2. This year organizers have planned a full slate of events in and around the second annual event, including some live entertainment at the start/finish line.

The day gets underway at 7 a.m. with the walker start. There will be a warm-up and singing of "Oh Canada" before the runner start at 7:30 a.m.

At the finish line there will be a food and drink station for runners, with the Rutherford Creek Trio playing the Gore-Tex main stage.

The Little Rippers Kids Run sponsored by Rokmaster, gets underway at 10:30 a.m., followed by the North Shore Credit Union Awards Ceremony where prize money will be awarded to the top open racers, and the top athletes in the age categories will get their medals and prizes.

Following the awards, there will be live entertainment as Test Pilot and Matsui808 from Digital Mountain Tribe play ragga dub on stage alongside master drummer Mbuyiselo “Munkie” Ncapayi from The Drum Café in Vancouver. There will be an interactive drumming workshop and 300 drums available to play with Munkie. Visit www.whistlerhalfmarathon.com.

WOVA registration May 29

If you missed the early registration period for the Whistler Outdoor Volleyball Association, the official registration day is Tuesday, May 29 at Dubh Linn Gate, starting at 6 p.m. All teams and players, including those who have already registered, are required to attend to receive their shirts, team volleyball, team photo and to sign waivers.

Teams arriving will need to get a number for what division they want to play in. Monday and Thursday divisions are already full, so teams looking to play co-ed recreational four-on-four or intermediate three-on-three should be prepared to play another night, Friday or Sunday. The competitive two-on-two division is also filling up.

By picking up a number, teams will know at the start of the evening if they're going to be able to play this year. If a division fills up they should be prepared to play in a different division or make plans to split up and have players join other teams. Due to the limited number of courts there is a limited number of teams for each division.

To connect with other teams and players, league coordinator Scott Rogers is asking players looking for teams and teams looking for players to join the Whistler Outdoor Volleyball Association's Facebook page and post their information on the wall. You can also attend the registration event on May 29.

The league gets underway June 10 and wraps up on Aug. 19. For more info, visit www.wova.ca.
