The King of the Rail series continues on Saturday, Feb. 12, with another jam under the lights at the base of Blackcomb. Registration starts at 4:30 p.m. in the Blackcomb Daylodge, and the contest runs from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
As always, the event will be judged by the skiers and riders themselves, with participants voting for the people they thought had the best moves.
A pair of Atomic skis or an Atomic Snowboard will be up for grabs in the prize draw at every contest, as well as other prizes from Nintendo, Atomic and Roxy.
The cost is $2 to enter with a valid Night Moves pass.
Slopestyle on Sunday
The third event of the Sprite Park Riders Sessions, a slopestyle on Blackcomb, takes place on Sunday, Feb. 13 in the terrain park.
Advanced registration is suggested at any Whistler-Blackcomb Ski School Sales or Guest Relations location, as the Sprite events do sell out and slopestyle is one of the most popular events. Event day registration will be available until 9:45 a.m. in the Rendezvous Lodge.
The event is open to all skiers and riders, and draw prizes include Atomic skis and snowboards, as well as gear from Nintendo, Showcase Snowboards, and Glacier Shop.
Hockey legends come to Whistler
The rosters for the second annual Re/Max Sea to Sky Hockey Challenge are filling up fast, with tickets still on sale for both the Vancouver and Whistler Games.
The event, which is a fundraiser for PacificSport’s PodiumFund, takes place in Vancouver on Saturday, Feb. 26 and in Whistler on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $25 and are available through Ticketmaster and the Whistler Activity Centre, 604-932-2769.
Whistler Minor Hockey will also benefit from the 50/50 draw, and the youngest players, age 5-6, will take to the ice during the intermission.
The two teams taking to the ice are Team Burke, which will be coached by former Vancouver Canucks GM Brian Burke, and Team Nonis, which will be coached by the new Canucks GM Dave Nonis and Howie Meeker.
Team Burke includes NHL’ers Ray Ferraro, Cliff Ronning, Doug Risebrough, and "King" Richard Brodeur. Also on Team Burke will be Steve Darling and Jay Janower from Global Television, Cammi Granato from the U.S. Women’s National Team, country singer Aaron Pritchett, former B.C. Lions kicker Lui Passaglia, and B.C. Lions Jason Clermont and Brent Johnson.
Team Nonis includes actor/director Jason Priestley, Will from Jack FM, Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell, musicians Barney Bentall, Matt Johnson, Craig Northey and Jim Cuddy, and former NHL’ers Jyriki Lumme and Geoff, Russ and Bruce Courtnall.

Squamish golf in season
If there’s a bright spot to the type of winter we’ve had in the Sea to Sky corridor it’s the early start to the golf season.
The Squamish Valley Golf and Country Club opened for the season on Feb. 9, a new record for the club. The greens were only covered for about three weeks this year, compared to months in previous winters.
"Due to the mild winter and uncovered greens, golfers have witnessed the immaculate greens for some time now, looking forward to this day," said general manager Brian Avey.
Early season rates will be in effect, although the restaurant opened for regular hours after Feb. 9.
Whoosh second in Victoria
The Whistler Whoosh women’s volleyball team finished second at a B.C. Volleyball Association tournament in Victoria on the weekend, finally losing in the Tier II finals to Team Ay Caramba. Twelve teams from the Lower Mainland and Victoria took part.
The team, which is sponsored by Whistler Cable, includes Carlee Howell, Sue Oliver, Veronika Voracek, Olga Achiardi, Myrna Iaconetti Bush, Mairi Smith, Kylie Spicer, Melanie Bernier, Nicolle Bortolussi, Karine Serra and coach Bill Sirota.
