Sunday Loonie a success

The Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association held a pre-season Loonie Race at Lost Lake on Sunday, taking advantage of the early season conditions to kick off the mountain bike season. About 90 racers took part in the first event, a potluck dinner followed with WORCA providing the refreshments.

The course was short by most Loonie standards, but long enough to make things interesting. The race started and finished in Lost Lake Park and included Upper Panorama, Tin Pants, the White Gold Traverse, two sections of the RMOW’s new singletrack, the Hydro Hill climb to the Molly Hogan trail.

The winner of the first race was Dave Burch, who finished the race in just over 23 minutes. Chad Miles was a close second, while Kevin Phelps, racing on a singlespeed bike, was third.

Tobi Henderson was the top female, followed by Sylvie Allen.

Tyler Allison was the top junior.

The official start to the Thursday night Loonie Race season is the Al Grey Memorial on April 21. Races will be held ever week through to the end of September.

WORCA’s annual bike swap, a fundraiser for the club’s youth programs, is on April 23 at the base of Creekside, in the square outside of Dusty’s. Details will be finalized in the coming weeks.

You can sign up in advance at any Whistler-Blackcomb Ski School Sales or Guest Relations location, or on the day of the competition in the Rendezvous Lodge until 9:45 a.m.

Helmets are mandatory and mouthguards are strongly recommended. You’ll also need a highest level terrain park pass and an event waiver if you’re under 18. The cost is $20, and every event is followed by a prize draw that includes skis and snowboards from Atomic, as well as prizes from Nintendo, Showcase Snowboards and Glacier Shop.
