Pemberton Loonie race on Saturday

The Pemberton Valley Trails Association, Pemberton Bike Co. and WORCA are teaming up to host a Loonie Race in Pemberton this Saturday, April 16. Meet at noon at the gravel pit behind the townhouses on Pemberton Farm Road East to pick up your WORCA membership and register for the race. The after-party will take place on the patio of the Pemberton Steak House.

The Pemberton Valley Trail Association would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who helped make their annual trail maintenance day a success last Saturday. After a pancake breakfast, work teams worked on Lumpy’s Epic, Mission Impossible, PhD, Smoker’s Lounge, Hedley’s Trail and Happy Trail.

Thanks to Pemberton Valley Supermarket for the pancake mix and fixings, the Lions Club for the portable cookhouse, WORCA and the RMOW for providing tools, and the Pemberton Bike Co. for organizing the event.

Soccer registration now online

The Whistler Youth Soccer Club is now taking registration for the upcoming season online at www.whistlersoccer.com. The spring schedule will also be available online in the next few weeks.

For parents that cannot register online, there will be limited in-person registration this Friday, April 15, at the Myrtle Philip Community Centre lounge from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Players must be born in year 2000 or earlier.

Coach hosts Triathlon Clinic

Local trainer Val Burke is hosting a 12-week triathlon clinic, starting April 23, with group training sessions every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Usually each session will include training in two disciplines.

Registration includes a Triathlon B.C. membership for the season, personalized training programs, and more.

The clinic will wrap up July 10, prior to the Squamish Triathlon.

Slo-Pitch captains meeting Thursday

The Whistler Slo-pitch league is holding its annual captains/managers registration meeting Thursday, April 21 in the Spruce Grove Field House. The meeting is recommended to all returning teams, as well as anyone wishing to enter a new team. For information contact Tim Houlihan at 604-905-8572.

Volleyball teams on top of province

The Whistler Women’s Volleyball Team finished its season with a silver medal at the provincial championships, which were held last weekend at Douglas College in New Westminster. After round robin play the Whistler team advanced to the finals with wins over Vancouver Thunder and a strong team from SFU before losing in the finals. The team included setters Sue Eckersley and Laura Wetaski, middles Julie Rockwell, Maeghan Thomas and Wanda Chalk, and power hitters Kristen Homeniuk and Carol-Ann Martin.

The Whistler Women’s Volleyball Team is sponsored by Re/Max, W1, the Body Shop and Tapley’s Pub.

The week before the Whistler Whoosh Women’s Volleyball Team played in the Tier 1 provincials against the top women’s teams in the province. The team won the Tier 2 provincials last year, which advanced them into Tier 1.

Although they didn’t make the finals, they kept their games close and came away proud of their performance.

The Whoosh would like to thank Whooshnet, Cable 6 and Merlin’s for their sponsorship, and coach Bill Sirota for his continuing commitment to the team.
