This Friday, Feb. 2, LUNA is offering an evening of snowshoeing under a full moon.
Presented by LUNA and the Rotary Club of Whistler, participants will get a pair of snowshoes, a gondola ride, hot chocolate, energy bar, and a guided tour on Blackcomb Mountain with Outdoor Adventures. The cost is $8 for LUNA members and $10 for non-members.
There are only 30 spots available, and advance reservations are required. Call the hotline at 604-935-8372 to secure your spot.
The group will meet before 7:30 p.m. at the Excalibur Gondola, and the tour will be around three hours.
The snowshoe tour also marks the beginning of a series of events prompted by the LUNA Challenge, with the coordinators of Late and Unique Nighttime Alternatives challenging local businesses to create their own alcohol-free events. To date the Rotary Club, Watermark Communications, Snap Whistler and the Whistler Museum and Archives have risen to the challenge.
Relay Twoonie tonight
The Whistler Nordics Twoonie Race season continues tonight with a relay race, with teams of two being paired up at the start.
Sign-on is at the Lost Lake warming hut after 5:30 p.m., with the event getting underway at 6:15 p.m. The cost is $2 with a Whistler Nordics membership, which includes food and refreshments from this week’s sponsors, the Cinnamon Bear Lounge and Summit Sport. Memberships are available for $25 at the start.
Last week’s event had over 75 racers.
The top junior female was Akiko Clarke, followed by Jennifer McTavish and Erin Davidson. Bobby Bunbury was the top junior male, followed by Birken Metza. Braden Metza and Alex Gershon tied in the one lap race.
For the adults, Stacey Bodnaruk was the top female, followed by Jen Armstrong and Christine Suter. Sten was the top male, followed by Matt Bodkin and Dave Burch.
Volleyballers host Super Bowl party
The Whistler Women’s Volleyball Team is hosting a Super Bowl party at Merlin’s this Sunday, Feb. 4, to raise money for their season. Last year the team won the provincial Tier 2 championship, and they hope to return to the provincials again this year.
The fundraiser will consist of draws, mini games and other activities, with a list of prizes that includes gift certificates at Araxi, Milestones, and La Bocca, and a night’s accommodation at Belle Neige Bed and Breakfast. Other prizes include lift tickets, and items donated by sponsors.
The pre-game festivities get underway at 2 p.m., and the kick-off is 3 p.m.
Mosher cracks top-20 at World Cup
Whistler’s Tyler Mosher, in his first year with the national disabled cross-country ski team, managed a pair of top-20 results in IPC World Cup competition. On Jan. 14 Mosher placed 15 th in a 20K Classic race in the standing category. The following weekend he headed to Germany where he placed 18 th in a 5K Classic race, and 20 th in a Spring Classic competition.
This year the IPC Cross Country World Cup Finals take place at Mt. Washington on Vancouver Island.
Weasels recruiting volunteers for nationals
The Whistler Weasel Workers have been on the frontlines for virtually every single ski race held in Whistler for more than 30 years, and are looking to boost their numbers for the 2007 Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships in Whistler this March.
Organizers estimate that they will need about 640 volunteers to assist in hosting this event, which will also take place in Whistler in 2008 and 2009 in the lead-up to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
On-slope positions include gatekeepers, slip crews, security, timing and equipment management, as well as helping to set up and take down the courses. Off-slope positions include accreditation, race administration, lunch crews, refreshment tent volunteers and party organizers.
All volunteer Weasels will receive Weasel wear, free food and drinks, after work refreshments, passes to the Weasel after-party, and, thanks to Whistler-Blackcomb, credits that can be applied towards season passes.
Volunteers will be needed from March 18 to 28.

Solid week for minor hockey teams
It was a busy weekend for Whistler’s minor hockey teams, with some teams playing three games last weekend.
The Atomic Rep team went 1-1-1 in three games, tying Seafair 1-1, beating Hollyburn 5-1, and losing a close one to the North Shore Winter Club 5-4. Their record now sits at 13 wins, 5 losses and 4 ties on the season, with their next home game at Meadow Park on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
The Atom C1 team took a 12-0 thumping from North Vancouver, but will be back in action this Saturday at 9 a.m.
The Peewee C1 team beat Sechelt 6-0 to bring their record to 7-3-2. Their next home game is Sunday at 9 a.m.
The Peewee C2 team also won its game, beating North Vanouver C10 by a score of 5-4.
The Bantam Rep Team lost 5-3 to Coquitlam on Friday, then tied West Vancouver on Sunday to bring their record to 10-5-3. Their next home game is Sunday at 3:15 p.m.
Bantam C1 beat Sechelt 7-0 to get their record above .500 at 9-8-0. Their next home game is Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
The Midget Rep team won both of their games, first beating the Vancouver T-Birds 4-1 on Saturday, then edging the North Shore Winter Club 4-3. Their record is now a league-leading 15-3-1. They play at home on Sunday at 4:45 p.m.
The Midget C2 team (11-4-0) suffered a rare loss to North Van C1 on Sunday by a score of 3-1, then rallied on Sunday to defeat North Shore 10-5.
The Midget Girls eked out a 3-3 tie to the North Shore Avalanche, then lost 3-1 to South Delta. While their record is 2-13-2, they are showing improvement each week and are keeping their games close. They play at home on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
