Last hash bash of the season
Escape Route and Whistler Running Experience are hosting their final hash harrier run of the season this Tuesday, Aug. 29 and are inviting all runners to come out and run.
The goal is to find all of the control points on course. Because some of those points have several optional routes it’s possible for recreational joggers to keep up with the fast runners.
The finish line, as always, is a secret, but there will be the usual food and refreshments on site and at the Cinnamon Bear Bar, as well as prize giveaways.
Organizers had 45 runners at the last event, and hope to have more next week.
The cost is $5 to take part and registration starts at 5:30 p.m. at Escape Route. The run starts at 6 p.m. sharp.
Swimmers on top of provincials
A pair of Whistler siblings who have been training this summer with the Squamish Pirates swimming club had a solid showing at the recent B.C. Championships in Kamloops. It was a three-day event, with hundreds of kids competing in different age categories and events.
Blair Chartrand, 12, competed in division three, where he earned a gold in the Individual Medley 200 metres. He also raced in the individual 50 metres breast stroke, finishing with the silver medal – just one-hundredth of a second back of gold. He was also seventh in the 100 metre IM and 13 th in butterfly.
His younger sister Kristianne, 8, qualified in butterfly and breaststroke at a regional meet. In the breaststroke she placed 12 th in the province, while she was relegated to the consolation final in butterfly to finish in 16 th .
Both athletes swim with the Whistler Seawolves program during the winter, but joined the Squamish Pirates for their competitive summer program.
Last call for Phat tire fanatics
The six-race Phat Wednesday Downhill Series will wrap up this Wednesday, Aug. 30 on a course yet to be named.
The series kicked off on June 14, and has since broken all past records for participation – a testament to the popularity of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, as well as the great draw prizes available.
To participate all riders have to be members of WORCA, have valid lift passes, and chip in $2 to the pot. The entry fee includes food and refreshments after the race, as well as a chance to win draw prizes from Sram, Fox, WTB, Kona, Race Face, and other sponsors.
Registration starts around 5 p.m. at the base of the mountain, and the race gets underway at 6 p.m.
There will be other opportunities to race this season. Joyride Huckfest, which takes place Sept. 30-Oct. 1, will include the Joyride downhill, a Super D and an amateur slopestyle contest.
5 Peaks this Saturday
The fourth event in the B.C. 5 Peaks Trail Running Series takes place this Saturday, Aug. 26 on Whistler Mountain.
Two courses are available, a 5.65 km Sport course and the 10.55 km Enduro Course. Both will start and finish outside the Roundhouse Lodge, following a selection of trails around the high alpine.
At press time on Wednesday over 400 runners had signed on to take part this year, and organizers are expecting up to 600 with last minute registrations.
You can sign up online at www.5peaks.com , and race day registration is available until 9:45 a.m. at the Salomon Store in the Westin Resort and Spa. The cost is $40, which includes a lift ticket, refreshments after the race and a chance to win draw prizes.
There will also be a short children’s race at 10:30 a.m. in the alpine, and the Enduro and Sport races get underway at 11 a.m.
Movie production seeking hockey players
Voice of Treason Productions is filming an ice hockey scene this Saturday, Aug. 26 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Meadow Park Sports Centre, and they are looking for extras – hockey players with full gear and 100-plus spectators to fill out the arena and cheer on Wade Fennig, a Vancouver actor and retired semi-pro player.
Participants will be compensated with beer, donuts, coffee, giveaways and free skating during filming.
