Midget rep team continues to win

The Whistler Winterhawks Midget Rep team won a pair of games over the weekend, beating Vancouver 10-1 and Surrey 5-1 to improve their record to 9-1-0. The team contains most of the same players that took a Bantam Rep team to second in the province last year, and the year before went undefeated in 30 regular season and playoff games. Their next home game is on Sunday at 6:15 p.m.

The Atom Rep squad also had a good weekend, beating Richmond 7-3 and tying Burnaby 3-3 to bring their record to 5-3-3. Their next home game is Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

The Peewee C1 team (5-1-1) beat Hollyburn C2 9-0, while Peewee C2 (3-1-2) persevered against Hollyburn C1 6-4. The next game is Sunday at 9 a.m.

The Bantam Rep team also had a winning weekend, beating Burnaby 6-1 and North Vancouver 4-3 to improve to 8-1-2 in the standings. The next home game is on Sunday at 3:15 p.m.

Bantam C1 split their games, losing 6-1 to West Vancouver on Sunday, before winning Monday’s game against Squamish 5-2.

The Midget C2 team rounded out the winning weekend with a pair of victories. The first was over North Vancouver C6, and the second over Squamish C1, bringing their Week 6 record to 8-3-0.

The Midget Girls team, after finishing with a tie last week, lost badly to Richmond M1 by a score of 8-1, bringing their record on the season to 1-8-1.

LUNA brings back dodgeball

LUNA (Late and Unique Nighttime Activities) is continuing its drop-in nights through the month of December, starting with dodgeball on Monday, Dec. 4. The fun is open to everyone aged 18 to 35, and costs just $3 for LUNA card holders and $5 for everyone else.

The competition runs from 8 to 10 p.m. at Whistler Secondary School, and no experience is necessary. Wear sports clothing and non-marking gym sneakers. There will be a free bus from staff housing, or you can get there by Whistler and Valley Express.

On Friday, Dec. 8, LUNA will be hosting a music jam at Millennium Place, $3 for cardholders, $5 for non-members. Eamon from Dub Empire will be leading the open jam session and participants should bring instruments.

Squamish Cougars on the prowl

The Squamish Cougars hockey team has wrapped up Week 10 of the season with a winning record, beating the Armstrong Sharks 7-1 at home this past Friday. Their record is now 10-9-0, leaving them tied for third place with the Bellingham Bulls.

That will likely change this Friday, Dec. 1 as the Bulls come to play the Cougars at home this Friday at Brennan Park arena. The Cougars also play the top-ranked New Westminster Whalers at home on Sunday, and with two wins have a chance to pull into second place overall.

Whistler events receive $25,000 in Legacies Now funding

Legacies Now, which oversees the Hosting B.C. program, has contributed $25,000 towards a pair of Whistler events, from a provincial investment of $399,200 in 26 sporting events.

The first contribution of $10,000 went towards the 2006 Birmingham National Wheelchair Tennis Championship, which took place this past weekend at the Whistler Racquet Club.

Another $15,000 will go towards the 2007 Pontiac GMC National Alpine Championships, which are returning to Whistler for a second consecutive year, from March 20 to 28. Close to 200 of the top alpine skiers from across Canada are expected to take part, drawing an estimated 10,000 spectators.

Funded by the B.C. government and the City of Vancouver, Hosting B.C. has invested more than $1 million in 29 communities and 96 events since 2004.

Tyler Mosher tops in Nor Am races

Whistler’s Tyler Mosher, a recent addition to the national adaptive cross-country ski team, got off to a strong start this season with Nor Am Cup wins in the Adaptive Standing category.

Mosher finished first in both the 5 km and 10 km classic events at Sovereign Lakes Nordic Centre outside of Vernon, qualifying him for World Cup races in Finland, Austria and Germany with the National Para-Nordic Sport Team.

Mosher is currently training at the national centre in Canmore, Alberta and will return to Whistler in December to continue training in both cross-country and adaptive snowboarding with the goal of qualifying for the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in both disciplines — if adaptive snowboarding is chosen as an event.
