Ever two years the Whistler Skating Club holds a gala year-end production to showcase the progression of their skaters, with production values that are quite astonishing for a small club.
This year the theme is Splash!, a journey under and over the seas.
More than 75 young skaters aged from 3 to 15 will be featured in Splash! The show will also showcase the work of 50 volunteers who have spent more than a 1,000 hours making 140 costumes, sets, and orchestrating the show. As well, the club is hosting a pair of guest skaters this year — 2007 Canadian Junior Men’s Champion Jeremy Ten, and B.C./Yukon Territories Senior Men’s Sectional Champion Gary Wong.
Tickets to the show are $5 for children up to Grade 7, $10 for high school students and seniors, and $15 for adults. Tickets are available at Meadow Park Sports Centre and through Whistler Skating Club members.
The first show is on Friday, May 4 at 7 p.m., and there will be two shows on Saturday, May 5, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Bike Swap details confirmed
The Whistler Off Road Cycling Association has confirmed its annual Bike Swap for Saturday, April 21, at the Creekside base outside of Dusty’s.
WORCA will be accepting bikes and bike gear to sell from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and the public is welcome after 9 a.m. The cost is $2 per tag, plus 10 per cent of all items $1,000 and over, and 15 per cent of all items $999 and under. All proceeds go towards WORCA’s youth programs, including camps, clinics, and sponsorship for a high school program.
Last year WORCA raised more than $9,000 for youth, based on over $76,220 in sales.
As a reminder, only WORCA is permitted to use the area to sell bikes and bike gear this year and people selling outside the perimeter will be asked to leave.
WORCA is looking for volunteers to help out this year, as it’s a big job and takes a lot of work to put on. The reward is putting people on bikes, growing the sport, and providing resources for youth programs. People dropping off gear can start picking up unsold equipment at 2 p.m., and anything not claimed by 4 p.m. will become WORCA’s property.
Cash will be accepted, and WORCA also has the ability to take credit and debit cards.
Hockey players to battle for Under 16 Cup
Two Sea to Sky hockey players have been named to the Zone 5 team, which will challenge for the B.C. Hockey Under 16 Cup from April 19 to 22 in Mission.
Defenceman Alexander Hosner of Whistler has been named to the squad, as well as goaltender Corey Koop of Squamish.
Both boys were scouted at a camp in early January, and made a roster of 18 skater and two goalies that were pared down from a field of 75 skaters from the Lower Mainland, including Greater Vancouver, and Sea to Sky.
All told 160 boys will be representing eight zones from across the province.
Hilltrip hosts backcountry potluck
This Saturday, April 14, the Association of Whistler Area Residents of the Environment and Hilltrip are organizing a backcountry potluck off Whistler Mountain, raising awareness of global warming and the potential harm to future snowpacks. Participants will be photographed in front of a message that says “Whistler says Step It Up Canada! Cut carbon 80% by 2030”, and the print will be sent to provincial and federal governments.
If you would like to take part, meet at the Roundhouse at noon. Participants should bring something to eat, and full backcountry gear for a short trip into the alpine backcountry. Dress for the weather — the event will be cancelled if the weather is too extreme.
Symmetrics rider wins U.S. Open
Vancouver’s Svein Tuft stunned the American cycling world with a win at the recent U.S. Open in Richmond Virginia, riding for the Lower Mainland-based Symmetrics team. The course was 182 km and followed an overnight snowfall. A first place finish bumped Tuft to third overall in the U.S. rankings. Whistler’s Will Routley is a member of the Symmetrics team, but did not travel with the team to Virginia.
