Just over 200 riders shrugged off the cold and a crucial Vancouver Canucks game to take part in the first Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association Loonie Race of the season Thursday, May 3. The race was sponsored by Zog’s, RBC Royal Bank, and WORCA, and included a selection of gravel roads and muddy singletrack in Lost Lake Park.

The winner on the men’s side was Dave Burch, who had been warming up in the Squamish Loonie races for the past month. He crossed the finish line in 26:41.

Greg Grant was second in 27:01, and stayed with Burch for most of the ride until he got the worst end of a handlebar bump and fell behind. Mike Boehm picked up third place in 27:30.

For the women, Dr. Cathy Zeglinski was first to the finish line in 38:31, followed by Lindsay Burch in 39:12, and Reena Worden in 39:43.

The top male junior was Max Horner in 39:41, while Victoria Whitney was the top junior female in 43:54.

Tonight’s race (May 10) is sponsored by the Alpine Café. Sign on starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Nicklaus North entrance to Lost Lake Park. The race gets underway at 6:30 p.m.

Freeriders invited to Valleycliffe of the Dolls

The sixth annual Beyond the Valleycliffe of the Dolls (BVOD) race will take place in Squamish on Saturday, June 2, with a course that freeriders would enjoy.

The BVOD was once a competition, with riders seeing how many rock faces and stunts they could clear, but was changed to a group ride last year. The course includes five different rock peaks in the Valleycliffe area of Squamish, and some of the steepest, most technical rock sections in all of Sea to Sky. Riders will hike and bike to the top of the descents, and ride what they can.

This year there will be an aid station with fruit, Gatorade and water, and all participants are welcome to the after party at the Howe Sound Brew Pub.

The BVOD starts and finishes at the top of Westway Avenue in Squamish, getting underway at 11 a.m.

You need to be a member of the Grass Roots Mountain Bike Association (SORCA or North Shore Mountain Bike Association) to take part. Advance registration is at Tantalus Bike Shop or Corsa Cycles for $25, or at the start area for $35.

All proceeds will go towards Squamish Search and Rescue.
