Park Rider Sessions wrap up

While there were a few sunny days last week, winter was still very much in effect on Sunday for the final slopestyle event in the Park Rider Sessions presented by Telus calendar. It was snowing, blowing and cold for the athletes, with each getting two runs through the course on Whistler Mountain.

Thomas Roberts won the Snowboard Men 17-Plus competition with a 26.5, followed by Trevor Procyshyn with a 24.8 and Ray Kollars with 20.8. Tomoko Kikuchi was first in Female 17-Plus with a 33.6, the highest snowboard score of the day, with Kaneko Keiko in second with a 23.8.

In Ski Men 17-Plus it was Steven Hager in front with a 30.0, followed by Brendon Reid with a 28.4. Jenny Strong competed alone in Ski Female 17-Plus but still pushed it to finish with a 24.5.

Ski Male 14 to 16 was the biggest category. Mitchell Wilson was first with a 31.0, followed by Taylor Wilson with a 30.0 and Liam Measure with a 27.3. All three are members of the Whistler Blackcomb Freestyle Club and competed in the B.C. Championships the previous weekend.

In Ski Male 13 and Under, Luke Smart was first with a 30.3, followed by Braedon Wheeler with a 25.9 and Callum MacConnachie with a 22.2.

Mosquito Lake run kicks off Sea to Sky season

The annual Mosquito Lake Trail Run has been confirmed for Sunday, May 1, meeting at the end of Reid Road. The course follows a roughly nine-kilometre selection of trails in the area, with a few rugged sections. Runners and walkers are welcome.

Registration is at 9:30 a.m. with a 10 a.m. start. The cost of entering is $15, with all proceeds going towards Pemberton Search and Rescue.

Miller second in opening DH pro event

Squamish's Miranda Miller and Katherine Short of the Sunshine Coast laid down the gauntlet this past weekend in Port Angeles, Washington by placing second and third in the women's pro category of the first 2011 Professional Gravity Mountain Bike Tour event of the season. Jill Kinter of the U.S. took the win by close to six seconds.

On the men's side, the U.K.'s Danny Hart placed first, followed by South Africa's Andrew Neethling and Duncan Riffle of the U.S. The top Canadian was Vancouver Island's Dean Tennant in seventh place. Andrew Mitchell, also from the Island, placed 16th.

Whistler returns to North Shore Bike League

Last year Whistler Secondary fought to be included in the North Shore Mountain Bike League, and ended up hosting two events including a league competition and the provincial high school championships.

The team is back in action again this spring, and will be hosting the fourth race on the calendar on May 11 - assuming the snow melts enough.

There are roughly 200 competitors per event, representing 16 high schools from North Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast and Sea to Sky.

Countdown to the bike swap

The Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association is hosting its annual bike swap on May 7 this year, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Whistler Olympic Plaza.

Last year's swap sold over 150 bikes and hundreds of other gear items, raising $12,000 for the WORCA's youth programs. That includes support for the high school team, 10 weeks of WORCA youth dirt camps, youth toonie nights, the Lumpy Leidal Award, and more.

More details will be announced in April, but drop-off will be between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Other WORCA news to come includes the annual Trail Sweep, which will take place when the snow recedes enough to ride, and registration for summer Dirt Camp programs. Visit the website for more information.
