Food Bank 5K run/walk to take place this weekend

The Whistler Food Bank has been busy lately and will need all the food and cash donations it can get this fall season.

For the last four years the Whistler Food Bank 5K, organized by trainer and coach Christine Suter, has done its part to raise donations for the food bank by hosting a short 5K run around the golf course Valley Trail.

"It's totally casual, a way to get people out for a fun event," said Suter. "It's a distance that anybody can run or walk, they can do it with their kids, with their pets, it's stroller friendly, it's everything."

Registration is at the Whistler Valley Golf Club from 8:15 a.m. on Oct. 23, with the event starting at 9 a.m. There's no entry fee, but a grocery bag of non-perishable food items or a few dollars for the food bank is appreciated.

"It doesn't have to be a big donation, everything helps," said Suter. "The Food Bank is seeing high numbers again this year and demand will probably go up again with slow season."

Halloween Toonie Ride Oct. 27

The Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association is gearing up to host their annual Halloween Toonie ride on the evening of Oct. 27.

All members are welcome to come out for the ride, which will once again take place in the Whistler Interpretive Forest. The ride will take place in the dark with pumpkins marking the trail, and good lights are essential.

Registration is in the area near the old bridge and the after-race party is at Burnt Stew Café in Function Junction.

There's no prize for being the fastest, but WORCA will reward the best costumes in the event.

Broncos win again

The Sea to Sky Broncos made it a four-peat on the weekend with a 28-0 win over the North Vancouver Sea Hawks on Sunday, moving the team up one spot to second in the North Shore Football League's pee wee rankings. Jack Forsyth scored three of the team's touchdowns and added a two-point safety on defence. Ian Davidson ran back an interception for a touchdown and Xavier Cardoret added the conversion.

The peewee league is a full equipment, full-contact division for kids aged 11 and 12, using NFL rules.

The Whistler Saints, a flag football team for kids 10 and under, also played on the weekend. They lost that game 14-6, with Alex Binette scoring the team's only touchdown. Josh McKenzie and Griffin Brown kept the game close with good defence.

Mountain bike team on podium at Pan Am Games

One of the crucial steps in qualifying to represent Canada in the 2012 Summer Games is the Pan American Games currently taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Canadian mountain bikers started Team Canada off right with two medals. Amanda Sin of Ontario took the bronze in the women's race, behind Heather Irmiger of the U.S. and Mexican rider Laura Lorenza Morfin. It was Canada's first medal of the Games. Mikaela Kofman, the other Canadian rider, placed fourth.

Later that day, Victoria's Max Plaxton captured the silver in the men's mountain bike race, behind Hector Paez of Colombia.  Jeremiah Bishop of the U.S. was third.

The other Canadian racer, Derek Zandstra, placed eighth.

Canada's top riders, including Catharine Pendrel and Geoff Kabush, did not attend the Pan Am Games. Both have already qualified for the 2012 Games.
