Despite the more than year-long waitlists at the Whistler Children's Centre, its board of directors has made the decision not to reopen the Spring Creek daycare facility.

The decision was announced via email to members last week.

"Our problems are not unique to any other communities," said Kari Gaudet, director of child care services for the Whistler Children's Centre Society.

"The child care system is broken."

Several factors were considered in the decision, not the least of which was the lack of qualified teachers for the infant/toddler program.

Gaudet also used the example of the Bear Cubs program (four-year-old and Kindercare) at Spring Creek that had five to six children a day in it but was licensed for 22.

"The demand is not consistent enough," she said.

In addition, there are limited government and outside funding sources to help make ends meet.

It's not clear what's happening to the Spring Creek facility, which has been closed for more than a year. Discussions are ongoing with the municipality, the children's centre and the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation.

The centre is also looking in the long term at finding more space at the Nesters location.

There will be a meeting to discuss the situation or ask questions on Monday, June 14 at 5:30 p.m. in the Marmots classroom. Child minding will be provided.
