Sprite Series wraps up

It may have been spring in the valley, but it was business as usual for Whistler skiers and boarders last weekend with the popular Sprite Park Rider Series wrapping up for the season.

More than 40 athletes turned up for the superpipe on Saturday, which was icy and fast as the high alpine clouds kept the sun off of it for most of the day. As a result a number of skiers and boarders were getting their biggest air of the year, and not all of it was on purpose.

In the prize draw after the contest, Debbie Christienson won the Atomic Tweak skis and Oliver Roy won the Atomic Syndicate snowboard.

The slopestyle on Sunday enjoyed a little softer conditions and attracted a crowd of more than 80 skiers and boarders. The skis went to Michael Day and the snowboard to Jason Wexler.

It was a breakthrough year for the Sprite Series, with record-setting participation and a strong showing in the ski categories. In some events, the skiers outnumbered the boarders. In other events, like Saturday’s halfpipe, some of the girls posted higher scores than the guys in different age categories.

There were nine events on the winter calendar: three halfpipe, three slopestyle and three snowcross. Complete results for the season are available on the Whistler-Blackcomb Web site at www.whistler-blackcomb.com/calendar/events/snowseries.asp.
