Squamish bike festival looks for volunteers

The annual Squamish Mountain Bike Festival, which includes the Test of Metal cross-country race, is ready to roll from June 21 to 23.

The annual Squamish Mountain Bike Festival, which includes the Test of Metal cross-country race, is ready to roll from June 21 to 23.

Although it’s still more than two months away, almost 200 cyclists have already registered for the Test of Metal event, which is limited to 800 entries.

The Test of Metal is a gruelling 67-kilometre grind around Squamish streets and trails.

The festival kicks off on June 21 with a show and shine parade featuring classic cruisers and chopped bikes.

Following the show, cyclists take to the streets of downtown Squamish for the annual Intergalactic Chariot Race Championships on Cleveland Avenue. Racers pull modified chariots, occupied by a trusting friend or relative, around a challenging obstacle course, racing the clock and each other.

The Test of Metal runs the following day, June 22, wrapping up at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre. There’s also a Teen Test Cross-Country Race.

On Sunday, the day kicks off with the Mini Metal at the Squamish Station Shopping Centre, with races for kids aged four to eight.

Following the Mini Metal, some of the top freeriders in the region will square off on Squamish’s most challenging double diamond trails in the Rock Star Invitational Freeride in Valleycliffe.

That afternoon, some of the top trials riders in North America face off in the North American Trials Championships Series in Squamish Town Centre.

According to the organizers, the Squamish Mountain Bike Festival is one of the best events of its kind in North America, largely due to the involvement of the community.

To help the weekend run smoothly, the festival is once again looking for volunteers.
