Calling all road racers – Team Escape is hosting the 2002 B.C. Time Trial Championships in Squamish on Aug. 18.

The 37 kilometre race runs from the Cheakamus River Bridge on the Squamish Valley Road to a turnaround spot 18.5 kilometres down the road and back. It’s a flat, straight race with no sharp corners or hills.

The only adversity on the course may be the wind, which should be at the cyclists’ backs for half of the race. The course is a mixture of smooth pavement and chip seal, with one wooden bridge.

The event is open to junior and senior men and women and veterans in the A, B and C level.

One event memberships to Cycling B.C. are required for insurance reasons. The entry fee is $20 per rider. American riders are also welcome to compete, but are eligible only for prizes, not championship placing.

Road racing is making a comeback in B.C. with more than 30,000 spectators coming out to watch the Tour de Gastown last month. The race returned to Vancouver after a nine-year hiatus.

Organizers are expecting a strong turnout and are starting registration at 7:30 a.m. The first racers leave at 9 a.m.

The registration and parking area is located approximately two kilometres up the Squamish Valley Road, by the B.C. Hydro Substation.
