It’s likely the mystery of how and why Squamish lawyer Robert McIntosh died five years ago will finally be revealed next month.

On Nov. 28 a sentencing hearing will be held for Ryan Aldridge, the 25-year-old who plead guilty to a manslaughter charge in the death earlier this month. During the hearing it’s probable that the events surrounding McIntosh’s death will be described.

For years a code of silence surrounded the death.

McIntosh died after going to investigate a house party at the home of a close friend, Dr. Richard Cudmore, on New Year’s Eve 1997.

Cudmore was on a Mexican vacation. His 19-year-old son remained at home.

Autopsy results show that McIntosh was beaten to death.

While police suspected some of the revellers little could be done to solve the killing because no one would talk.

Police continued their investigation, spending years sifting through fact, gossip and innuendo.

Finally last June they charged Aldridge with manslaughter. In September they charged a second man, 25-year-old Ryan Neil MacMillan, with assault causing bodily harm.

MacMillan will appear again in court Nov. 21.

According to news reports , prosecutor Trevor Cockfield said outside North Vancouver provincial court that he was pleased with Aldridge’s guilty plea.

"I think (Aldridge) is taking responsibility for what happened and the guilty pleas also shows some remorse for what happened," he said.
