Anyone interested in literacy can join the Breakfast of Champions in recognition of National Family Literacy Day.

The breakfast will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at the Squamish Public Library from 8 to 9:30 a.m. for anyone who wants to learn more about literacy issues.

The Squamish Public Library and Capilano College, both members of the Regional Literacy Co-ordination Project, will host the breakfast.

This is the fourth annual literacy event to recognize the importance of maintaining good literacy skills, which need to be continuously honed.

Studies show that 22 per cent of adult Canadians have serious problems dealing with any printed materials. An additional 24 per cent can only deal with simple reading tasks.

"School readiness in young children is influenced by their parents' level of education," said Michelle Lebeau, regional literacy co-ordinator.

"The higher the level of a parent's education, the more likely the child will succeed. Without crucial parental support, the cycle of under-education continues in families from generation to generation."

National Family Literacy Day will be held across the country on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
