This Sunday a field of 500 athletes will take part in the annual Squamish Triathlon, which includes a 1,500 metre swim leg on Alice Lake, a 37.5 km road ride around Brackendale, and a 10 km trail run in the forest area opposite Don Ross Secondary School.
It’s a very different course this year. To cut down on drafting, the cycling leg will now consist of four short laps rather than an out-and-back ride on the Squamish Valley Road.
Although it’s a more compact course, there will still be road closures over the course of the event:
• There will be 20 minute delays and a highway closure of the Sea to Sky Highway at the Alice Lake intersection starting at 9 a.m. as cyclists cross the highway from the swim transition at Alice Lake.
• One lane of the Sea to Sky Highway between the Alice Lake intersection and Depot road will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., still allowing for two lanes of vehicle traffic through the area.
• Southbound traffic on Squamish Valley Road will be detoured to Government Road from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Northbound traffic on Government Road will be detoured to Depot Road and Sea to Sky Highway from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Westbound traffic on Depot Road will be detoured to Sea to Sky Highway from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Local traffic only is permitted on Ross Road from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In addition, motorists are asked to watch for cyclists, and obey direction signs and traffic controllers.
