Squamish Triathlon sees Sea to Sky residents turn out in droves

Some 184 individuals and 43 relay teams of two or three took part in the 14 th annual Squamish Triathlon on Sunday, with perfect conditions from start to finish.

Vancouver's Ryan Smiley was the athlete to beat with a total time of one hour, 59 minutes and 41 seconds on the Olympic distance course - 1,500-metre swim, 37km bike and 10km run. He was the only athlete to break two hours. Mike Adams of Vancouver was second in 2:00:40, and Mark Linseman of Ontario placed third in 2:01:05.

The top Sea to Sky athlete in the race was Whistler's Adam Ward, who placed seventh overall and second in the Male 20 to 24 age group in 2:10:03. Ward's best event was the bike, where he posted the fourth fastest time of the day.

Two spots back in the overall was Squamish's Volker Schneider, who also placed first in Male 40 to 44 with his time of 2:11:43.

From Squamish, Tim Moore was seventh in Male 45 to 49 in 2:19:03.

Whistler's Greg Sandkuhl was first in Male 65 to 69 in 2:24:00, close to 30 minutes ahead of the next racer in his group.

Jon Decaigny, racing in the Clydesdale category in his first ever Olympic-distance race, was first overall in 2:26:25.

Claire Daniels placed second in Female 25 to 29 in 2:26:38.

Pemberton's Gary Martin was fourth in Male 35 to 39 in 2:26:41.

Squamish's Roger Shirt was ninth in Male 45 to 49 in 2:26:41.

Whistler's Sarah Strother was second in Female 40 to 44 in 2:29:21.

Squamish's Julie Mountifield was fourth in Female 30 to 34 in 2:32:43.

Mike Hedberg was third in Male 40 to 44 in 2:32:59.

Paul Zuckernick was 11th in Male 45 to 49 in 2:34:01.

Jenni Chancey was third in Female 25 to 29 in 2:34:09.

Whistler's Marla Zucht was first in Female 35 to 39 in 2:34:47.

Derek Gagne of Squamish was eighth in Male 35 to 39 in 2:35:56.

Karen Blaylock of Whistler was first in Female 50 to 54 in 2:39:10 - over seven minutes faster than Pemberton's Lee Edwards, who finished second in the category in 2:46:53.

Michel Berthoud of Whistler was 10th in Male 35 to 39 in 2:39:29.

Paul Demers of Squamish was 12th in Male 45 to 49 in 2:39:37.

Darin Labrenz was 13th in Male 45 to 49 in 2:40:14.

Karen Ogilvie was second in Female 35 to 39 in 2:43:38.

Birgitte Marthinsen was third in the same category, just 13 seconds back.

Erin Merrick was sixth in Female 30 to 34 in 2:47:47.

Jayme Hills was seventh in Female 30 to 34 in 2:48:36.

Leah Stadelmann was eighth in Female 30 to 34 in 2:48:36.

John Legg of Whistler was fifth in Clydesdale in 2:48:51.

Vicki Haberl of Squamish was third in Female 50 to 54 in 2:50:06.

Stephanie Askwith of Whistler was fifth in Female 25 to 29 in 2:51:18.

Tom Barratt was first in Male 60 to 64 in 2:51:20.

Victoria Challies of Squamish was ninth in Female 30 to 34 in 2:54:04.

Linda Glenday of Whistler was fourth in Female 40 to 44 in 2:54:25.

Stacey Spiers of Squamish was fifth in Female 40 to 44 in 2:57:26.

Jennifer Leigh was third in Female 45 to 49 in 2:58:36.

Jeff Kallberg was seventh in Clydesdale in 2:59:48.

As for relay races, Vancouver's Davis Draft Dodgers (Chris Bennett, Roger Lee and Shane Onufrechuk) were first in the male category with a combined time of 2:05:35. Two Squamish teams - Squamish PAR-T (Andrew Campbell, Pete Fritz and Richard Avedon-Savage) and Dads Uckin Gass (Ian Lowe, Malcolm Schulz and Graham Schulz) - were second and third in 2:15:07 and 2:17:07.

Among the female teams, No Speed Limit of Whistler (Catherine O'Neill swim and run, Shayla Libin bike) was first in 2:20:47. Second was Vancouver's Cupcakes (Sue Barlow, Diane Dol and Erin Hartnett) in 2:40:01, with Whistler's Tri Mamas - Marie Anne Prevost (swim and bike) and Tami Mitchell (run) - placing third in 2:40:58.

In the co-ed group, Two Girls and THAT Guy from Vancouver (Esther Speck, Tim McDermott and Carmen Merkel) were first in 2:19:31, followed by Daniel's Buying Dinner (Daniel Wong, Wilson Tran and Wilson Wong) in 2:26:09. Team H&P from Pemberton (Heather Vacirca swim, Paul Vacirca bike and run) were third in 2:26:13.

 

Osoyoos Half Iron

A few locals competing in Ironman Canada also made the trip to Osoyoos this weekend to compete in the Desert Half Iron - 2-km swim, 90-km bike and 21.1-km run.

Fero Piliar placed 56th overall and seventh in the men's 35 to 39 with a time of 5:26:48.

Christine Suter was fourth in women's 40 to 44 in 5:43:56.

Patricia Leslie of Squamish was 20th in women's 40 to 44 in 7:47:04.
