Squash players in provincials hold their own

Thomas fifth in B.C.

Whistler’s Ben Thomas beat a player with a higher ranking that he’d never beaten before to finally place fifth in the B.C. Squash Championships this past weekend.

Two other Whistler athletes also made the trip, Lloyd Adams and Natasha Strim. Adams made it to the semi-finals of the men’s D division, while Strim made it to the semis of women’s B — the top Whistler result for a female in the past six years.

Thomas has been warming up by heading to the city to play some of the top players in the province, as well as inviting ranked players to Whistler for matches. And then there’s his secret weapon.

“It’s must have been all the skiing I’ve been doing, I’ve got strong legs from all those powder days,” he joked.

“Seriously though, we’ve got a strong local club and we get better results with every tournament. There are about 15 of us who play on the provincial circuit… but you have to play in certain tournaments to get into the provincials, which is why it was just the three of us.”

The Squash Club is also hosting its first junior clinic at the end of April, open to all levels of players, aged 6 to 16. You can sign up on the board outside the courts at Meadow Park.
