A painting by Whistler artist Vanessa Stark is part of the design of a new Volcom jacket, the proceeds of which go to B4BC — Boarding for Breast Cancer.

The painting, called 'Mountain Mind' shows an owl's face in blues and reds, is in the 2016 Volcom B4BC "Act Insulated" jacket and was designed by senior Volcom Women's designer Carolyn Campos.

"It's a really exciting thing to be a part of," says Stark, adding there are matching gloves and a stomp pad. "I was approached about it and I thought it sounded amazing all round. It's so beautiful and the proceeds are going to B4BC. It was proposed to be the jacket for this year and it went through a lengthy process. I am so happy to be a part of it."The jacket is available in Canada and the U.S., online and retail.

Stark calls B4BC a "really cool company" founded by snowboarders which offers preventative information on cancer.

"It's a good, positive company and it's involved in snowboarding, too, which I'm involved with," she says.

Women in the Directors Chair recipients named

Some familiar names are among those chosen to take part in the Women in the Director's Chair Story (WIDC) and Leadership program at the Whistler Film Festival.

Mary Walsh, Anita Reilly McGee, Jordan Canning, Maya Gallus, Frances-Anne Solomon, Nicole Dorsey, Ana De Lara and Marie Clements will take part in the three-month program, which runs at the WFF from Dec. 2 to 6.

The recipients will develop their feature film and web series projects, working with actors, technicians and other industry mentors.

"Taking part in this WIDC workshop makes me excited about the possibility of someday having television and film represent the perspectives of women, " says Walsh, a recipient of the Order of Canada and the Governor General's Lifetime Achievement Award in the Performing Arts, in a release.

"Although women make up 51 per cent of the Canadian population, they comprise less than 20 per cent of the directors and screenwriters working in Canadian Film."
