Re: “Where stepping down might be stepping up

While I agree that it would be a shame on Oct 20th to find that, John Weston was re-elected with 30% of the vote and that Pam Goldsmith-Jones was right behind at 29%, with a 5% Green vote and, for argument's sake 40% of Green voters reporting Ms. Goldsmith-Jones as their second choice, the proposal of calling on no-hope candidates to withdraw from the race is misplaced. It places responsibility where it does not belong. It is not the candidate who is responsible, but voters. Each voter must assess the situation and make their choice - vote for the ABC candidate (Liberal Pam Goldsmith-Jones in our riding, according to threehundredeight.com) or vote for the candidate they think constitutes their favourite choice, regardless of their likelihood of winning.

We are fortunate to have excellent candidates in our riding. In that context, I would absolutely support an editorial calling for voters to 'do the right thing' - knowing with confidence that both Mr. Melamed and Ms. Goldsmith-Jones would be excellent voices to have in Ottawa. But I would not support an editorial such as this that called for a chill on the important voice that the Greens have in this election and the impact of that voice on the platforms of the other parties.

Full disclosure: I am a volunteer on Ms. Goldsmith-Jones' campaign both because I see in her an excellent candidate and because I believe she and the Liberals represent the best opportunity to unseat Mr. Weston and replace the Harper Government with something better. The above is my own opinion and in no way constitutes an opinion of the campaign.
