The Whistler Secondary Storm senior boys basketball team traveled to Hope this past weekend to play in the their annual Hoopfest Tournament, playing three hard games against competitors from across the Lower Mainland.

In their first game, the ‘A’ ranked Whistler squad faced AAA ranked Sardis Secondary. Schools are ranked according to their size, and in boys basketball a single ‘A’ means 80 or fewer boys in Grades 11 and 12, while AAA schools have 226 or more boys.

The Whistler team kept it close in a low-scoring game, but ended up losing 55-39 with a strong Sardis showing in the closing minutes. Mark Baria, a Grade 10 student, was the Storm’s top scorer with nine points.

On Saturday morning the team played Heritage Park Secondary School from Mission, and broke out with a 10-2 lead. The team never looked back and finished with the win by a score of 71-52. Three 11 grade students racked up the most points, with David Kolvek sinking 14 points, Jacob McPhail contributing 17 points, and Casey Svejkovsky winning the game MVP award with 26 points.

In the team’s third game against Agassiz, the Whistler boys kept it close to the end. Down by two points with seven seconds left, Whistler’s Tommie Larochelle grabbed a missed shot and powered it over two defenders with less than a second left to tie the game. The game went to overtime, and Whistler ended up losing 53-50.

Whistler Secondary plays its first home game this Thursday, Jan. 17 against Pemberton, starting at 4 p.m. Their Friday home game against Delta has been cancelled.

Nordic Twoonie branches out

The weekly Whistler Nordics Twoonie race is branching out tonight (Jan. 17) with a headlamp event planned for the Whistler Golf Club. Trails have been groomed on the course just for the race, and participants can expect a flat and fast conditions.

The event is being sponsored by Whistler.com, and Samurai Sushi.

Registration gets underway at 5:30 p.m. at the Whistler Golf Club clubhouse, and the race gets underway at 6:15 p.m. The organizers like to add a few twists each week, and this week’s twist is a pole drop — halfway through the race, competitors have to drop their poles and skate using only their legs.

Headlamps are required to take part, as it will be dark for the duration of the race.

A membership in the Whistler Nordics is required to take part, as well as the $2 entry fee. Get there early if you’re new to the Twoonie races — last week’s mock biathlon event had over 70 participants.
