The conditions were variable, to put it mildly, for the 76th annual Enquist Slalom, taking place at Mt. Seymour this past weekend with fog and rain for training on Friday, fog and snow Saturday and a full-bore blizzard on Sunday. Somehow organizers managed to stage four slalom races for the 101 athletes taking part.
The Whistler Mountain Ski Club had a big weekend.
On the first day of competition the women's win went to Grouse Mountain's Antonia Wearmouth, followed by four WMSC skiers: Stefanie Fleckenstein second, Mikayla Martin third, Esme McTavish fourth and Chantal Deane fifth. Also in the top 15 were Sabrina Wong in ninth, Cheyenne Ling in 11th, Cassidy Deane in 12th, Gabrielle Smith in 13th and Claire Baragar in 15th.
The K2/J1 men had a tougher time with Grouse skiers sweeping the podium. From Whistler, Max Peiffer was fourth, Alex Gershon fifth, Riley Seger sixth, Cameron Alexander seventh, Alex Uryga ninth and Cooper Yates 11th.
The WMSC women came back on Sunday with Mikayla Martin winning gold and Stefanie Fleckenstein taking her second silver medal to place first overall in the Enquist standings. Chantal Deane was fourth, Esme McTavish fifth, Gabrielle Smith eighth, Shelby Slay 10th and Sabrina Wong 12th.
The Whistler men were kept off the podium the second day as well, with Max Peiffer leading the team in fourth. Also in the top 15, Jeffrey Cadman was sixth, Cooper Yates seventh, Alex Gershon eighth, Alex Uryga ninth, Max Kirshenblatt 10th, Carson Llewellyn 11th and Graham Brown 15th.
The next big race on the schedule for the K2 team is the provincial championship in February, followed by the annual Parsons Super G, taking place in Whistler from Feb. 17 to 19.
