Get your bottles ready for recycling because another group of Whistler Secondary School students is off to Japan.
Before they leave on July 3, the students are fundraising for their 10-day trip to Whistler’s sister city of Karuizawa. This is the third annual exchange between students from Whistler and Karuizawa. The Japanese students came to Whistler earlier this year to take advantage of the snow on the mountains. They also attended English lessons and spent a day at the high school.
All the Japanese students were placed with Whistler families and the Canadian students will get the same glimpse into ordinary Japanese life at their hosts’ homes in Japan.
On last year’s trip Whistler students were also treated to a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, a visit to nearby Nagano to check out the venues from the 1998 Winter Olympic Games and a visit to a bathhouse, among many other things.
With glowing reports from last year’s students, the next 10 Whistler students and the two chaperones are looking forward to their Asian adventure too.
The bottle drive will take place on Sunday, June 22. Families and businesses can call 604-935-8378 ahead of time to request pick up on that day.
In addition the students will be selling 100 tickets to the Spirit Whistler 2003 International Karate Championships on Saturday June 28 at the high school.
The money from the tickets will go towards the trip. There will be a Taiko music group featured at the championships as well as a baseball bat-breaking demonstration by the local karate club.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
