Whistler Health Care Foundation raises $50,000 at annual fundraising event

There is nothing like a hopping dance floor, vivid art and savoury wine to properly toast health care.

Despite the stressed economy, the Whistler Health Care Foundation managed to raise $50,000 Saturday, Nov. 29, at their annual black tie dinner and wine gala entitled Indulge.

“To have raised this much is really quite incredible, and the evening just hummed along,” said Marnie Simon, chair of the Health Care Foundation.

“We are very happy with it, and very happy that people seemed to expect to come back next year.”

The money raised from the 162 attendees was higher than the foundation’s initial expectations. In October, Sue Adams, chair of the foundation’s fundraising committee, predicted the event would bring in only $40,000.

Last year’s inaugural fundraising event raised $80,000, with 250 people attending.

Simon added that while the foundation’s mandate has always been to fund equipment for Whistler’s Health Care Centre, the group recently decided to broaden their scope to other health care needs. They will be conducting a needs assessment soon, to get a better feel for the area’s needs.

“There are other things out there in the community that are needed for health care,” said Simon.

“Whether we do it or not depends on the assessment of what is needed and if it is an appropriate thing.”

Since 1995, the foundation has raised $808,000, plus an extra $1,230,000 for the computed tomography (CT) scanner set within the year.

Simon also thanked Indulge’s sponsors, volunteers, and organizers for throwing the successful event.
