Arts Whistler celebrates the 10th annual Art on the Lake program at the Alta Lake Station House, starting on June 25 and running until the end of August.
Art on the Lake has introductory-level to advanced-level workshops in a variety of visual art forms, including acrylic and oil painting, pastels, drawing and silkscreening.
The program is as much about its location as it is about the art — it takes place at the Alta Lake Station House, a rustic heritage home located on the waterfront of Alta Lake.
Instructors take students through their chosen visual-arts discipline, drawing inspiration from the views of Alta Lake and the Coast Mountains.
More experienced participants can enroll in the technique-based intermediate- and advanced-level courses, while beginners can try their hand at introductory classes aimed at exploring and experimenting with art.
Art on the Lake features some new instructors as well as returnees; there are a variety of single and multi-day workshops.
Vancouver artist Lori Goldberg returns to Art on the Lake to teach her Drawing into Painting workshop, walking through sketching techniques and the use of acrylics to create expressive content on canvas.
For those looking to expand their knowledge of oil and acrylic painting techniques, artist Dominik Modlinski's new 50 Shades of Blue three-day workshop will draw heavily on the surrounding Whistler landscape.
Painter Andrea Mueller is teaching several Art on the Lake workshops, including Bringing Colours to Life — Painting Animals for Intermediates and Introduction to Silk Screening on July 23.
Classes include Paint Doesn't Bite (all levels) — June 25 to 26; Drawing into Painting (all levels) — July 1 to 3; Painting the Figure & Portrait in Oils or Pastels (intermediate) — July 12 to 14; Drawing the Figure & Introducing Abstract Elements (all levels) — July 19 and 20.

Be the Best, Play the Fest returns
The local band competition, Be the Best, Play the Fest, returns for the third year.
Five finalists vie for a spot in the lineup at July's Pemberton Music Festival, and $10,000 in total prize money.

Animal Nation breaks up
Whistler hip-hop duo Animal Nation has called it a day. Garnet Clare (Tall Man) and Mike Armitage (Armadillo Slim) have released eight albums and EPs together. They announced the split on their Facebook page on May 26.
"Sad day. Happy time throughout though, so it was all worth it.Made lots of new friends, played with lots of our heroes and icons, saw lots of nipples and covered them all up with stickers," the announcement read.
Animal Nation's most recent album was It's Great to be Us, released in Sept. 2015. The band's music is available on www.animalnation.bandcamp.com.
