Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops was the site of the final Canada Cup races of the season last weekend with cross-country and downhill events. As well, the resort hosted the UCI Masters Mountain Bike World Championships, with categories for riders aged 30 and over.
Whistler riders struggled in the heat, but some did manage to find their way to the podium.
Tyler Allison and Brandon Semenuk finished first and third in the Under 15 men’s race, with Tyler winning by 1:11 over Evan Guthrie of Westbank.
In the Master 40-Plus Expert Men, Tyler’s father Bob Allison finished third overall, less than five minutes back of first place.
Former Whistler rider Mike Charuk was fourth in the same category, while Rob McSkimming claimed sixth.
Kris Sneddon was the top elite racer, followed by Ricky Federau and Andrew Watson.
Wendy Simms took the women’s race, followed by Catharine Pendrel and Mical Dyck.
None of the Whistler riders made the top-10 in the elite downhill category, although Jeff Beatty came closest in 25 th place. Adam Billinghurst was 35 th .
In the elite women’s downhill race, Whistler’s Danika Schroeter was first overall, followed by Micayla Gatto and Adrienne Miller.
James McSkimming limped through the line after a mechanical in the Junior Expert Men’s race, finishing 15 th .
Tom Prochazka won the Master 40 Sport Men’s group with close to seven seconds on his closest competitor, while his son Alex took the Under 15 category by a massive 35.61 second gap. His time would have put him in the top-25 in the elite men’s race.
Tyler Allison was second to Alex in the downhill, while Ryan Sullivan and Nicolas Geddes were fourth and fifth respectively.
In the Masters race, Trevor Hopkins was 10 th in the 30 to 34 race, which included racers from France, the U.S., Mexico, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Mike Charuk and Joe Maika were seventh and eighth in the 40 to 44 race and Bob Allison was 10 th in the 45 to 49 group. Tony Routley, who won his category at the World Masters Games in Edmonton in July, was a DNF.
