It wasn’t just Whistler that had record visits during the Christmas holidays. Sun Peaks Resort, near Kamloops, twice surpassed its single-day record of 3,275 skiers. On Dec. 28 the resort hosted 4,100 skiers and on Dec. 29 3,400 skiers were on the mountain. "To exceed 4,000 skiers is a major accomplishment," said Darcy Alexander, vice president and general manager of Sun Peaks. "Five years ago we were lucky to see 1,500 skiers in a day. Back then, the annual skier visit count was under 70,000. This year, we are well on our way to breaking the 200,000 mark." Other Interior resorts, including Big White near Kelowna, Rossland’s Red Mountain and Whitewater, near Nelson, also had abundant snow over the holiday period and were very busy. Many Interior resorts have undergone on-hill expansions or lift upgrades in recent years, as well as development of on-hill accommodation. The new development is now attracting skiers from all over, including Washington state. Sun Peaks in particular has seen strong growth in the Bellingham and Seattle markets. The Kamloops resort is particularly attractive to those markets because there is direct access by high-speed freeways. For skiers from those cities to come to Whistler they have to negotiate the labyrinth of roads through Vancouver.
